NAVMAN Serial Driver Installation

The following documents the installation of the GPS serial driver for the “NAVMAN GPS i Series” GPS receiver option-pack jacket with Compact Flash slot for the Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC.

Serial driver requirements:

iPAQ models supported: 3600, 3700 & 3800 series.  (Not the 3100 series)
iPAQ OS supported: on 3600 units: Pocket PC, ROM build 1.77 or higher. On 3700 & 3800 units: Pocket PC 2002, all ROM builds
Note:  The Pocket PC ROM build 1.77 for the 3600 series units can be downloaded from: http://www.compaq.com/support/files/handheldiPAQ/us/locate/48_1230.html

 Serial driver installation:

1.        Download the following file (Navman313.exe) to your PC.

2.    Use MS ActiveSync and  connect your desktop PC to your Pocket PC.  NOTE: Do not have the NAVMAN GPS jacket on your iPAQ Pocket PC.

3.         Connect the GPS receiver jacket to the iPAQ Pocket PC. The iPAQ PDA is now ready to access data from the NAVMAN GPS.

Communication port settings:

NAVMAN GPS uses serial port COM 4 on iPAQ 36xx and 37xx, and COM 5 on iPAQ 3800.
To use NAVMAN with WinPilot, the default serial port used by WinPilot needs to be changed from Com 1 to one of the above.
To do that, start WinPilot Simulator, goto Menu.Edit, and select Com Port onto one of the buttons. Then, press the Com Port button, and change Com 1 to Com 4 or Com 5, and set the baud rate to 57600.

Notes:

The NAVMAN GPS serial driver has an automatic power management feature. The serial driver turns on the GPS receiver when the software application opens the COM port to access the GPS data. Conversely the serial driver turns the GPS receiver off when the COM port is closed by the application.

The Compact Flash slot is available at all times. The slot is powered at all times while the NAVMAN GPS is connected to the iPAQ Pocket PC. The GPS is powered only if a GPS application has the COM port open. This ensures the NAVMAN GPS only draws power from the iPAQ’s battery when it is in use.
